LAN Volunteers make the difference !
Lizard Ancient Network volunteers have just had a bit of a change of scenery at Penrose Estate. The group of dedicated conservation workers meet regularly on tasks throughout the year to protect prehistoric sites across the Lizard Peninsula.
However, at Penrose their skills and enthusiasm have been helping the National Trust protect a comparitive youngster of the archaeological world - the remains of Carminowe Mill which dates back originally to 1250 !
LAN volunteers cleared a new route for a footpath along the old Mill leat, and around the old pool and track itself - discovering the only remaining wall of what were originally 2 mills into the bargain.
The work is the first stage to clear the Mill remains of scrub and vegetation, and the new route will provide an important footpath as part of the National Trust's longer term plans to re-create a wetland in the field below the Mill close to Loe Pool.
We can only say a huge thanks to everyone from LAN who came out and made such a positive difference - as someone described it on the day "LAN volunteers are ace ! "

Bird Rarety Spotted on the Lizard
A Balearic Woodchat Shrike has been spotted at Windmill on Predannack in the last week by our very own warden and bird expert Steve Bury. We believe this to be the first time one of these migratory birds has been seen in the UK so we are very proud to announce this rarity. Pictures to follow soon.

Outdoor Gym Open For Business
The first stage of the outdoor gym project is now complete and the gym is now officially open for use. The five pieces of apparatus are located to the side of the main drive between the coast path entrance at bar lodge, and the main house, on a very popular part of the estate with local runners, walkers and cyclists. So far in the past week we have seen many people young and old using the gym and we have had some really positive feedback so far. If you try out the gym please let us know what you think of it.

Spring comes to Penrose
Primroses bursting out all over!Easter is a great time to visit the Penrose estate, the primroses are out in full force at the moment. If you're lucky enough to see the first bluebell on the estate get in touch and let us know where you spotted it!
Kayaking on the Helford: We have nearly filled all the positions on the forthcoming kayaking days that will be held once a months from April the 11th. If you require information about how you can get one of the last remaining places please contact Layla at the property office on 01326 561407.
The Outdoor Gym: The outdoor gym at Penrose is now in it's final stages of completions. With the first five pieces of apparatus now up it will only be a matter of days before we can open the gym up to the public. Placed on a very popular part of the estates track it is hoped that not only running enthusiasts will stop to have a go on the monkey bars or balance beams. The gym was designed with help from members of the near by Porthleven Surf Club and local designers Boex 3D design solutions, and is made up of timber from the estate so is in keeping with natural surrounding. The gym should be open for use from Easter this year.UPDATE: Part of the gym is now open and ready for use! If you're visiting the estate why not give it a go?
